Why You’re Not a Burden: The Power of Finding Your Tribe

Did anybody else sing this in the tune of Cheers?

It is fun to be in business and realize there are SO many different industries and they all have cross over when it comes to paying our bills, hiring, staying up at night worrying (or not). I love getting to switch it up and talk to a very different industry than my own. It also makes me realize how much I live and breath Real Estate haha! Give Marcus a listen to get some different perspective on what it means to build a tribe.

I talked to a friend this week that doesn't call often. She has her own life and family she is raising that is not local to me. We talked for almost an hour and had a healthy back n forth of a conversation she really needed some support on. At the end of it she told me she thought of me when she realized she needed a fresh set of eyes/ears on what is going on and that she was sorry to burden me with her problems.

I interrupted her as quickly as I could to let her know she wasn't a burden and that I have been on her side since we became friends 20 years ago.

There are different types of people in the world. Ones that don't want to inconvenience anybody and feel like their problems aren't worth "burdening" people with. Ones that "burden" anyone with a heart beat that will listen to their problems. And a few more in between. I find it to be interesting to see the humans that show up and think they can't or shouldn't talk about what they are going through with anyone.

Why am I writing this? Because this feels like the underlying reason I have a podcast called Tribe Builders. There are so many people out there that have decided to be on an island and haven't even tried to walk to the other side to find there is actually a whole village there that supports one another with life sustaining practices. I have numerous calls with people each week (whether personal or professional) and a fair amount of people have been trained not to burden others. If you feel like you are burdening everyone, someone taught you to feel that way and it's up to you to teach yourself a different way. There are countless peer groups out there that would love to commiserate, share best practices, elevate and support you in your journey. If you ever never help finding them, reach out. I am relatively good at connecting people to other people, even if it's an industry I don't know yet.

If you opt to be someone who "keeps to themself", can you tell me how that has served you and how that has held you back? Food for thought..
